Creepy Crayon!Creepy Crayon! by Aaron Reynolds

Illustrator: Peter Brown

Published: 2022

Genre: Humor, Imagination, Picture Book

Audience: Pre-K, Lower Elementary

Summary: Jasper the rabbit is excited to find a purple crayon to do his homework for him. He struggles in school so decides to take advantage of this opportunity. When the crayon starts to control Jasper’s artwork, he gets a little creeped out. Jasper starts to feel guilty about letting the crayon do his work so decides to get rid of it. If only it was that easy!

Review: This is another fun story in the Creepy Tales Book Set. Children will enjoy the suspense that comes in finding out if Creepy Crayon takes over Jasper’s life. For those readers that have heard the other two Creepy stories from Brown, they will notice the subtle hints to the first two stories in the series. I read this book to my students around Halloween in my purple crayon costume. Although it’s not necessarily a Halloween story, the students were eager to find out what happens with this overbearing crayon.  Some children may enjoy Creepy Carrot or Creepy Underwear a bit more, but this is definitely a great addition to an elementary library collection and a good story to introduce younger children to spooky stories that aren't too scary.
