The Big Cheese by Jory John

Published: November 7, 2023

Genre: Picture Book

Audience: Preschool - 3rd grade

Content Warnings: Losing, gloating

Summary (From Amazon):

The Big Cheese is the best at everything, and brags about it, too. When the annual Cheese-cathlon comes around, the Big Cheese is prepared to win, as always. But what happens when the quiet new kid, Wedge Wedgeman, comes out on top? Is a slice of humility all the Big Cheese needs to discover that some things are better than being the best?

Review: Jory John does it again! This is a brilliant book to help explain that it is okay to not always win, celebrate others and have empathy and humility. This is a hard skill for children to learn, so having a book like this to help explain it is simply amazing! The Big Cheese spends his time gloating about how he is the best there is. The Big Cheese only chooses activities that he is good/ the best at. Then one day a little unassuming weAbout — Jory Johndge of cheese named Wedge Wedgeman comes in quietly and shows The Big Cheese that others have talents too and how to win gracefully. Winning and losing is a big part of life and helping children understand how to navigate those big feelings and situations is important. Children often cannot think bigger than themselves and that is exactly what The Big Cheese is doing. In the end, The Big Cheese finds that finding new activities and being a friend is better than always winning.
