Summary: In this instant literary classic about friendship, forging your own path, and doing what’s right, debut author Hannah Gold inspires fans of Pax and A Wolf Called Wander to make a difference in any way they can. There are no polar bears left on Bear Island. At least, that’s what April’s father tells her when his scientific research takes them to a faraway Arctic outpost. But one night, April catches a glimpse of something distinctly bear shaped loping across the horizon. A polar bear who shouldn’t be there—who is hungry, lonely and a long way from home. Fusing environmental awareness with a touching story of kindness, The Last Bear will include full-page black-and-white illustrations as well as a note from the author with facts about the real Bear Island and the plight of the polar bears.

Review: I wanted to like this story more than I did! I LOVE any stories about the Arctic so I was excited to get into this one. I loved how it opened with the map of Bear Island and immediately y found myself research ing more. I loved the map as it has a very magical feel to it.  I found it enjoyable, but not amazing, and at times difficult to push through. For me, the relationship between April and Bear was too unrealistic. I know it was fiction but for some reason I had a really hard time that she was befriending a polar bear. I guess I wanted it to be more realistic and magical at the same time! April's Dad was also just too frustrating being so neglectful. I still enjoyed the exploration of the remote northern Arctic world. I think there is an important message about us all doing what we can to help out planet. Animal lovers will adore this story, and I will happily recommend it to my young readers
